Location of Matemwe Lodge and Matemwe Retreat

Matemwe Lodge and Retreat are located on the northeast coast of Zanzibar Island in Tanzania. This part of Zanzibar Island is known for its fine weather and beauty, secluded away from the crowds.

Zanzibar Island is a tropical island east from the Republic of Tanzania measuring 60 miles long and 20 miles wide. Zanzibar Island is known for its beautiful beaches and coral reefs, its palm trees, its seafood and the magic of historic Stone Town, which was recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The northeast part of Zanzibar Island is known as Matemwe.

This part of Zanzibar Island is well known for its fine weather and natural beauty - the contrasting colours of the Indian Ocean, the fine white powder sand of the beach, the extreme beauty of the coral reef of the Mnemba Atoll (30-minute boat ride away) and the wild bush vegetation. Matemwe Bungalows borders a small village of fishermen, Kigomani, who go out sailing with their armada of traditional dhows on a daily basis.

This Zanzibar hotel is an excellent stay at almost any time of the year, as the tropical climate is fairly stable with average temperatures never dropping below 25 degrees. The water temperature is just as nice with an average temperature of 20 degrees. Matemwe is closed during the rainy season (the lodge is closed during May).
