Tanzania's tourism industry has in the past been based on the iconic names of Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar but today there is something brewing that is taking the travel world by storm. The iconic destinations are still top attractions in Tanzania but with recent developments in the country wilderness areas and beaches that have been unknown in the past are adding to an already impressive travel destination portfolio.
The Northern Safari Circuit
Arguably the most famous safari circuit on the African continent the northern circuit, based out of Arusha, includes Serengeti National Park, Ngrorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire national parks and the iconic Kilimanjaro.
Lake Manyara and Tarangire are not as well known as the others but they are nonetheless star attractions in their own right. The northern safari circuit is generally combined with a Zanzibar getaway for those wanting to add a beach holiday to their African safari.
Renowned for its beaches Zanzibar does however offer much more to visitors than white sand and coral reefs. The history of the island is fascinating - trading, slaving and colonialism all add up to a destination that could be sold on the history alone.
The Southern Reaches
Long in the shadow of the iconic northern reserves the wilderness areas of southern Tanzania are only now showing themselves to the world of safari travel. It is only through lack of financing that places such as Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park are not yet high on the list of places to visit.
With a new force in Tanzania these reserves are now becoming part of safari folklore. Some of the wildest and untouched wilderness in Africa can still be found in the southern parks and coupled with incredible game viewing ensure a safari experience like few others.
It is not only in the southern wilderness areas, however, where a new world is opening up but also along the coast where destinations beyond Zanzibar are becoming the choice of beach holiday connoisseurs.
Tanzania Beaches - Coast of Dreams
The Zanzibar archipelago consists of Unguja Island (also known as Zanzibar Island), and Pemba Island both hosting postcard beaches and great water activities.
The history of the islands is also fascinating and reads of the slave traders and adventurous scoundrels who once plied the east African Coast. Many may think that the islands are the best for a Tanzania safari and beach holiday but the mainland has as many beach destinations.
South of the Zanzibar Archipelago is the smaller and less well known Mafia Archipelago of which Mafia Island is the dominant feature. It is said by those in the know that the Mafia Archipelago provides the best diving and fishing along the east African coast.
Africa's Best Safari and Beach Experience
The southern safari circuit allows for easy access to the African continent's wildest wilderness areas and some of the best beaches. Dar Es Salaam is perfectly situated for a combination safari of Selous, Ruaha and Mafia or Zanzibar.
Selous Game Reserve is a 45 minute flight from Dar Es Salaam and Mafia island is a short hop from the city.
