Walking in the dense brachystegia forest at Sable Mountain Lodge is a great place to see a variety of bird life. You can expect to see a host of forest species including the exquisite Livingstone's Turaco, a variety of Hornbills and the Forest Weaver.
Whilst on guided Selous safari walks in the surrounding woodland, you will have the opportunity to see species such as Blue Monkey, Black-and White Colobus and the amazing Elephant Shrew. Around the lodge, it is possible to follow game trails across the hills in search of buffalo and the rare Roosevelt's Sable antelope, or traverse dry riverbeds where elephant dig for water.
On your Selous safari in Tanzania, game drives concentrate on the plains in the vicinity of the camp and the north of the park, as there are very few other vehicles around. Game drives usually begin at 6am and return around midday in time for lunch. You will head out again at 3pm, returning just before sunset.
Full day game drives will head deep into the park, returning late in the afternoon after a full day of Selous safari in Tanzania activities and picnic lunch.
Sable Mountain Lodge operates a boat safari as part of a full day excursion that includes a game drive to Lake Tagalala. The boat safari offers great opportunities to observe Hippos and Crocodiles at close quarters and to marvel at the bird life around the lake.
