Makakatana Bay Lodge is situated in the heart of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site and is surrounded by pristine uninhabited forestry.
Makakatana Bay Lodge offers visitors luxury accommodation in KwaZulu-Natal with private personal service and a homely touch. This KwaZulu-Natal safari lodge is the only privately owned game lodge offering luxury South African safaris within the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park (iSimangaliso) World Heritage Site in KwaZulu Natal.
Makakatana Bay Lodge derives its name from the 70 year old 'Crab House' on which the lodge lies. The 'Crab House' was once a storage place for crabs caught in the lake but has since been converted into the Makakatana Wine Cellar with a giant tree growing out its roof.
The lodge is set in a dune forest that bursts out over a wetland onto the banks of the lake. Hippos and other wildlife often wander through the lodge, underneath the walkways. The outdoor dining deck and your room's private viewing deck allow you to watch these wild animals uninterrupted in their full glory. Makakatana Bay Lodge's premier location within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park makes it ideal for fishing, boating, scuba diving, horse riding, and much more.
A bench has also been subtly placed close to the water's edge to allow one to sit quietly and birdwatch. Often in season, the bay in front of the lodge has hundreds of pelicans and other birds feeding.
This breathtaking lodge offers guests the ultimate luxury and service excellence - from the bright and spacious rooms with stunning views of the lake and water pans, to the private bush pool on the lake's edge. Ensuring that anyone can access Makakatana Bay Lodge, it has been equipped with handicap facilities.
