The gardens and surrounding forest are home to over 100 bird species including Cormorants, Egrets and Herons, birds of prey such as the African Fish Eagle and the Black Kite, also Bee-eaters, Honeyguides, Sunbirds, Orioles, Queleas and many others.

The gardens also attract the shy and endangered Angolan Colubus Monkey, a protected species, which lives in a large family unit in the forest. Also present but much more adventurous are the Sykes Monkeys.

Aqualand, the watersports centre at Pinewood Beach Resort chose Galu Kinondo Beach because it is unspoilt and safe, with calm lagoon waters right in front of the Resort, which are perfect for numerous water activities like windsurfing and snorkelling.

Guests scuba diving at Pinewood can see Whale Sharks, Dolphins and Manta Rays which often come to these waters. Boat trips can take guests along the pristine coastline to snorkelling points near Chale Island and the Kaya Kinondo Reserve, or guests can enjoy the views of the Mangrove Forests at Funzi Bay on a Jet Ski safari.

Guests can also take a mountain bike Eco-tour on a cultural visit to the Digo community and through the Kaya Kinondo forest, a sacred and protected place for the Digo people.

Pinewood Beach Resort and Spa is in very close proximity to the Pemba Channel, world-famous for its deepwater and abundant fish supply. Fine catches of Marlin and Sailfish have been achieved also good numbers of Wahoo, Kingfish and Dorado.

Aqualand runs a strict tag and release programme, which is in accordance with the IGFA (International Game Fishing Association) regulations for the preservation of rare and endangered species. At Pinewood, conservation programmes are run to preserve the local area and its indigenous people.
