Founded in 1903, Mua Mission is the oldest surviving catholic mission in Malawi. The mission is located at the foothills of the Dedza range that delimit the Rift Valley. The buildings erected by the first missionaries are still standing. Being probably the best-conserved colonial buildings in the country, they are different from other colonial buildings in Malawi. Here, the mission is more of the French Provencal style as other buildings are more British.

Cape Maclear is a peninsular dividing Lake Malawi into two branches. This area is very hilly covered with enormous blocks of granite and lush vegetation. The peninsular end in a beautiful bay protected by different islands and with white sandy beaches.

Mangochi is an old fort and slave town developed along the riverfront. Here you can find a small Lake Malawi Museum explaining the geography, history and geology of the area. This information help give a better understanding of the culture and people of Malawi. A visit to the old colonial cemetery during your stay at the Malawi lodge is an interesting reminder of a period that has passed.
