The top activity to experience at this camp is, of course, the 4x4 guided game drives. These are led by experienced rangers in the early mornings and late afternoons/evenings, when the animals are most active out on the Hwange plains. Each drive typically lasts around three hours, during which you’ll get some iconic sightings, especially as night falls and nocturnal predators like lions, leopards, wild dogs and hyenas make their grand appearance.
While guided bush walks, mokoros and 4x4 game drives are the top safari highlights at this Zimbabwean camp, it’s perfectly acceptable to spend the remainder of your time here in full relaxation mode. Order your favourite beverage and position an arm-chair in a strategic spot with a full view of the waterhole where elephants, antelope and other animals come to drink and cool off.
While the experience of encountering large game on 4x4 drives through this national park is hard to beat, what you’ll find during bush walks at Verney’s is just as exceptional. These generally depart in the morning and are led by armed guides who will teach you the art of animal tracking. They will also show you how to look for the smaller details while uncovering a wide array of little creatures that you might not ordinarily even think to look out for.
