Bird Watching

There are many rare species. A tree house has been built in the Riverine Forest for birdwatching, lunches, etc. It is set high up in the canopy of the large trees and offers superb views of the forest canopy and gorge.

Some of the more exotic species of interest to birdwatchers, such as the Knysna loerie, cinnamon dove, grey cuckoo shrike, blue mantled flycatcher, black eagle and the ultimate 'tick', the narina trogon, can be seen from our treetop viewing platform or on a 'walk and stalk' outing. This interzonal habitat allows tree enthusiasts the opportunity of identifying many uncommon species of trees, shrubs, orchids and ferns.

The braai (barbeque) area is large, set under a large cabbage tree in the front of the lodge. It is within these walls, the solitude, the trees, the birds, the orchids, the ferns, the noise and silence of the forest and the occasional glimpse of a bushpig, red duiker, bush buck or guinea fowl and baboon that make Forest Creek Lodge so special.
