After a 2.5 hour drive from Johannesburg, you could be sipping cocktails on a malaria-free safari in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, North West Province. You can see a great variety of game on the private land concession and in the wider reserve.
The Pilanesberg region was created thousands of years ago by massive volcanic eruptions and forms one of the biggest alkaline volcanic complexes in the world. The concentric rings of hills and unusual rock types make the Pilanesberg Reserve unique in geological terms.

By Air
Air charter can be arranged but there are a number of commercial airports in Gauteng Province, such as Lanseria and O.R. Tambo International, for scheduled flights from other centres.
By Road
- From Johannesburg
- Take the N4 Highway going west before turning north onto the R556 (follow the Pilanesberg signs). Continue past Sun City Resort entrance and Bakubung Gate turn-off and proceed to the 4-way stop.
- Turn right onto the R565 and proceed for 12km (7.4 miles) to the Shepherds Tree Game Lodge entrance.
