Sodwana Bay Lodge is set inside the iSimangaliso Wetland Park on South Africa’s far north coast in KwaZulu-Natal. It’s a place where coastal forest meets warm Indian Ocean waters, and it’s known worldwide for scuba diving, snorkelling and unspoilt beaches.

This is one of the country’s most beautiful and remote seaside destinations, yet it’s still easy to reach with a little planning.

Getting to Sodwana Bay

The lodge is a short drive from the main beach access point and dive charter launch area, making it ideal for divers and ocean lovers.

By Air

The closest airports are:

  • King Shaka International Airport - approximately 330 km (about 4 to 4.5 hours by road)
  • Richards Bay Airport - approximately 160 km (about 2.5 to 3 hours by road)

Car hire is recommended from either airport.

By Road (Self-Drive)

Most guests travel by car from Durban.

From Durban (King Shaka International Airport):

  • Take the N2 north towards St Lucia and Richards Bay.
  • Continue past Richards Bay towards Hluhluwe.
  • After passing Hluhluwe, continue north on the N2.
  • Take the R22 turn-off towards Sodwana Bay.
  • Follow the R22 until you reach the Sodwana Bay / iSimangaliso Wetland Park entrance.
  • Enter through the park gate (conservation fees apply).
  • Follow internal park signage to Sodwana Bay Lodge.

Total driving time: approximately 4 to 4.5 hours.
