Visit Historical Buildings, Gardens and Museums in Windhoek

Windhoek has a number of gardens, historic buildings (Alte Feste, Christuskirche), museums and galleries and many are along Independence Avenue. Windhoek is neat and compact, with a selection of pavement cafés - ideal for enjoying the excellent Windhoek beer and watching the world go by.

German-colonial architecture rubs shoulders with modern city buildings, but altogether there is a distinctive European air to this African capital. Shopping in Windhoek is a delight if you are interested in traditional arts and crafts.

Street vendors can be found along the Windhoek avenues selling jewellery and all kinds of curios or you can enjoy intense variety at one of the large craft markets available. There is also a wide selection of mainstream and fashion stores.

Most Windhoek city highlights can be experienced on self-guided walks in a day or two, but if you have more time there are a number interesting half and full day excursions available. You can also enjoy a variety of recreational facilities in the capital city of Namibia. There is an 18-hole golf course and country club, 2 well equipped upmarket gymnasiums one with an indoor pool, and a great municipal pool with a picnic area.

Windhoek is the centre of the brewing industry in Namibia and you can enjoy a full brewery tour on certain days in the week by appointment.

Heroes Acre

This huge modern monument is located just south of Windhoek and is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the liberation of Namibia.

Arnham Cave

This interesting tour takes you to the cave which is situated on the fringe of the Kalahari Desert in scenic surroundings. It has 4 500 metres of passages and is the largest in Namibia.

Stargazing

Cloud cover is limited in Namibia which is ideal for stargazing. The Capella Observatory is just 20 minutes south of Windhoek and there are 2 other great observation sites in the surrounding mountains.

Game-viewing in the Daan Viljoen Game Park

The Daan Viljoen Game Park close to Windhoek is a well stocked small game reserve with resort facilities and picnic areas. Go on a short game drive, enjoy 2 hiking trails or just relax underneath some shady trees. African wildlife like Wildebeest, Zebra, Giraffe, Eland and around 200 bird species can be seen in this game park in Windhoek, Namibia. There is also a big cat sanctuary where you can see Cheetah, Leopard and Lion at close range.
