Driving in South Africa:South African roads are in excellent condition, but South Africa is a big country, not easily traversed in one day, so plan your journey carefully. If you are not used to traveling such long distances, plan stopovers for the nights and break the journey, as fatigue is a major cause of car accidents on South African roads. All distances and speeds are given in kilometres (km). Speed limits are indicated by signs and vary between freeways, small roads and urban areas.
South Africans drive on the left side of the road. Wearing a seat belt is compulsory. Driving under the influence of alcohol is illegal and punishable by law. A valid, English driver's license with a photograph is accepted in South Africa. If your license does not comply with these requirements, you should obtain an international Driving Permit before your departure to South Africa.
