According to local legend and archaeologists, over 3 000 years ago miners, thought to be from India, found Forest Creek and established a village built from the local rock, and much of its remnants are clearly visible today. When they left, local Nguni tribes took over Forest Creek where they felt safe and protected from marauders that roamed the plain below.
It is only when one gets to the gate of Forest Creek Lodge that the steep, rock-strewn grassland is left behind, and one enters this little enchanted world. The mystique of the place is tangible. Following a trail deeper and deeper into the gorge, totally enveloped in mist and under a thick canopy of trees, a strong feeling of peace will overwhelm you.
