Directions to Leopard Lodge, Kafue

Leopard Lodge is an intimate safari camp situated in one of Africa’s largest parks, the Kafue National Park, Zambia.

Guests staying at Leopard Lodge in the Kafue National Park, Zambia can fly in from Lusaka or Livingstone. Road transfers from Lusaka can be arranged, the journey takes about 3 – 3.5 hours.

Peak season is from May to November, but the camp is open during the rainy season as well. You will be able to reach the game lodge with a 4x2 vehicle all year round. A driver and a 4x4 vehicle can also be arranged from Lusaka.

The Kafue National Park has many diverse ecosystems and the landscape is made up of rolling grass plains and forests. The park has remained undeveloped until recently and as such the game has been mostly undisturbed, which means there are excellent game viewing, birding and fishing opportunities away from the crowds of tourists.

Getting There By Air

Please speak to our Destination Specialists to arrange your flights for you. Flights from Lusaka take about 80 minutes and from Livingstone, about 70 minutes. Leopard Lodge staff will meet you and transfer you by road to the Lodge which takes about 45 minutes.

Self-Drive

Mumbwa is the last fueling point (Fuel is not always available here, thus fill your tank and jerry cans in Lusaka). From Mumbwa to Leopard Lodge and back is approximately 200kms. So it is recommended to fill-up at Mumbwa Filling Station if fuel is available.

The gravel road from Mumbwa to the camp has been re-graveled and it takes approximately 1.5 hours from Mumbwa to reach the pontoon 4km (2.5 miles) before the camp. (Note the pontoon only operates between 06h00 – 18h00)

From Lusaka

Take the M9 tar road leading West for 150km (93 miles)
Take the turn-off to Mumbwa
After approximately 3km (1.8 miles) you will reach a traffic circle, turn left at the first exit
Set your odometer in Mumbwa at the traffic circle to zero
Drive for approximately 1km and turn right on the first gravel road (D181)
Drive approximately 33.2km (20.6 miles) to where the road forks, take the left fork
At odometer reading 40.3km (25 miles) you will pass Chitunda Open Air Reform School on left. Keep right
At odometer reading 62.3km (38.7miles) you should reach Kabalushi Gate (to enter Kafue National Park
At odometer reading 82 km (50.9 miles) the road will fork again. Keep right. To the left is the Hippo Mine turn-off.
Drive on this road for approximately 8km (4.9 miles) until you reach the Kafue River
Cross the river with the pontoon on payment of US20 per vehicle
Drive for another 3.5km (2.1miles) and then turn off the main track (D181) sign posted Leopard Lodge
Follow this two track road for 1.6 km (0.9 miles) until you reach the camp.
