Sesriem is located near Sossusvlei in the Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia. The name of Sesriem is derived from the fact that to reach water six ox thongs were used in old times. Sessriem Canyon is a sight not to missed. It is located only 4.5 kilometres from the entrance gate of Namib-Naukluft National Park.
The canyon, approximately 2 to 4 million years old, is up to 40 metres deep and about 3 kilometres long. the Sesriem Canyon has been formed out of rock over the centuries by the Tsauchab River and is mostly a gravel bed with small pools of water which attracts wildlife and birds.
