Shiluvari has 30 hectares of land alongside the Albasini Dam which looks towards the Luonde Mountains of the Soutpansberg, Limpopo.
Guests at Shiluvari can enjoy the peaceful bush setting and views of the Soutpansberg from the lodge or aboard ‘Savannah’, the motorised raft that cruises the beautiful Levubu River, which later enters the Kruger National Park to join the mighty Limpopo River.
The lodge and grounds are a birdwatchers haven, hosting 2 different habitats - mountainous and riverine. Eight different species of heron have been spotted including the black-crowned night heron and white-backed night heron, also the African finfoot with the osprey seen in the summer months. Shiluvari has an on-site accredited birding guide who is available for birding trips in the vicinity.
Guests can embark on a day trip to the Kruger National Park via the Punda Maia Gate just 90km (56 miles) away, will pass through the luscious fruit-growing Levubu Valley. For great walking and adventurous mountain biking excursions, the Ben Lavin Nature Reserve is the place to be and it is a short drive from Shiluvari.
This valley also has the best artists in Venda, a wonderful opportunity to explore the work of these and other artists, potters, weavers and wood carvers exists in the self-drive Ribolla Arts Route, artwork is also available at the lodge.
Venda is steeped in myths, legends and ancient African kingdoms – there is a guided full or half day route where guests can discover a hidden lake and other mysteries. The closest town to Shiluvari is Elim, 23km (14 miles) east of Mukado (formerly Louis Trichardt) and home to Venda and Shangaan culture and art, it’s a busy little town with a lovely fruit market and museum.
