Things To Do at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve activities include watching Elephants, White Lions, birds of prey and viewing the San people's Rock Art.

Game Viewing

During the guided Big Five safari drive in an open safari vehicle, be it in the early morning or for sundowners, various species of plants, African wildlife and birds can be seen. Sundowner evening drives offer spectacular displays of light as the evening sun sets over the Little Karoo, and nocturnal animals can often be seen.

Guided nature walks are the ideal time to explore the smaller treasures of the bush, such as the small mammals, birds and about 600 plant species.

Wildlife Photography

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a photographers dream. Due to the perfect light conditions, during the twilight hours of sunrise and sunset it is advisable to use 100 ASA film for exquisite photographic opportunities. A 100 - 300 lens is a good choice. Macro photography is also incredible to capture close-ups of the smaller species.

Geology and Rock Art

The geology of Sanbona Wildlife Reserve consists of sedimentary sandstones, mudstones and siltstones from the Devonian era (more than 3,500 years ago). This period was the beginning of life on earth and trace fossils of various marine invertebrates have been found. The San rock art sites display evidence of the bushmen that once roamed the Karoo.

Boat Safaris

Peregrine, Sanbona's boat, is named after the Peregrine Falcon. The boat can seat 12 people and sets out on a cruise on the Bellair Dam in the early morning or at sunset. Safari-goers should look out for the resident Hippos and the large collection of bird species.

Star Gazing

With the absence of artificial light, the stargazing at Sanbona is amongst the best in Southern Africa. In a designated area free from light, with telescopic aid and knowledgeable guides, interpretations are given about the constellations of the Southern Hemisphere. Romantic stories of gods and goddesses banished to the heavens are woven into astronomical facts and unfolds before one's eyes.

Spa Treatments

A range of spa treatments are on offer at the lodge, and can be enjoyed in a treatment room overlooking the undulating mountains.

Cooking Classes

Learn how to cook traditional African dishes on a safari cooking class. Cook on an open fire, serve a delicious meal and be presented with a cooking certificate.
