Accessing The Retreat Selous

Selous Game Reserve's diversity and natural, unspoiled beauty makes it comprehensively one of the best Safari destinations in Africa. The Retreat Selous is accessible with light aircraft.

The Selous Game Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that covers an area of 55,000kmĀ² and lies just 200km south west of Tanzania's largest city, Dar es Salaam. The game reserve is the largest wildlife sanctuary in Africa.

The Retreat Selous is nestled on a little hill by the Ruaha River. The bird life in Selous is prolific and the 400 species recorded include the globally threatened Wattled Crane and the Corncrake. Black Rhino have been close to extinction, but can occasionally be seen in this wildlife-rich part of Tanzania.

The topography of Selous Game Reserve varies from rolling savannah woodlands, grassland plains and rocky outcrops intersected by the wide Rufiji and Ruaha Rivers.

Accessing The Retreat Selous

A 70 minute flight from Dar es Salaam to Selous airstrip is available on a scheduled charter or fully charter basis, followed by a 30 minute game drive along the Ruaha River to the lodge.

Daily scheduled flights from Zanzibar, Arusha and Ruaha also land at the airstrip in Selous.
